Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents,
I hope this newsletter finds you well. We have an exciting and busy week ahead at our school. It is hard to believe that we only have two weeks left of this term remaining.
Next week Tuesday and Wednesday will be the primary school parent teacher meetings, and confirmation emails with the preferred day and time have been sent out and received, so a very big thank you from the primary department for finalising these appointments so timeously. Please remember to attend these meetings as they are a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their teacher.
Ms. Debbie, our primary school art teacher, has kindly requested that primary students bring 2 euros to school next week towards additional Easter artwork to be created and sent home to encourage the Easter spirit. We thank you in advance and appreciate your assistance in this colourful appeal.
The Secondary Greek department, facilitated by Ms Fani and Ms Marianna, presented a fantastic assembly for our secondary students today. It was lovely to see the effort that was put in by all and the way some students extended themselves by presenting in a non-native language to a public audience. The secondary students have also been preparing for this Saturday’s march in the Paphos town centre in celebration of Greek Independence Day and they have improved in leaps and bounds throughout their preparation time. A very big thank you to Ms Emma for coordinating this preparation. Please be aware that participants are required to be present at the main Cyta building from 10:30 tomorrow morning. I implore all students to be correctly and neatly dressed in their school uniform as they represent our school at this historical event.
Sports day preparations for next week Friday are well under way, and the sports teachers have come up with some fantastic competitive games for all our students to participate in. The sports day event will be held at the Peyia Stadium and drop off and pick up for primary and secondary students will be at the stadium. A more detailed email for the day will be sent out shortly. We look forward to seeing you there.
The Year 9 options evening will take place this coming week on Wednesday at 14:30. This is an important information evening as the Year 9 students consider the subject options that will potentially begin their career path. Indeed, a significant decision.
The Friends of TLC are busy preparing for the Easter Fair, which takes place in the last week of term on Wednesday the 5th of April from 1pm until 4pm. They will begin selling raffle tickets from this coming Monday until the day of the fair. Tickets for the raffle will be priced at €1 each. I can assure you that there are some amazing prizes on offer. They have requested help in securing bottle donations. Should you be able to, please assist by donating any bottles, jars or plastic containers, as long as the product is new and sealed, to assist in offering up a wonderful prize for the bottle tombola. Collection boxes will be located at the primary and secondary school receptions. I truly believe that this year’s Easter Fair is going to be one to remember, there are just so many amazing games and events planned. Parents and children will really not want to miss out on this particular day.
Our school librarian, Mrs Carol Matthews, has done an extraordinary job in securing two real-life authors, Linda and Peter Lyne, who will be visiting our primary school, all the way from New Zealand, and they will be spending the day with us on Thursday the 27th of April, which coincides with World Book Day. They will have signed copies of Linda’s book, ‘Mawes Paws’ available to our students for €8 each, which is excellent value. Should your child want to purchase a signed copy, we are encouraging that monies be brought to school from Monday as we will have the Easter holiday occurring between now and then.
I trust that you were able to find the time to listen to the parent centred webinar presented by internationally renowned cyber-criminal lawyer, Ms Emma Sadleir. If you weren’t able to watch it, I believe this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbkLtrA9JhU is available for one more day.
I believe the assessment schedule is still chock a block and this is a busy time of year for assessments. Once more I encourage you to have a word with your child/ren to remind them of the importance of each and every assessment that they write; as all grades accumulate to give them their final mark at the end of the year and my hope is that each and every student achieves the goals that they have set for themselves.
Lastly, a reminder that our clocks will be moved forward from 3am on Sunday. We look forward to seeing you on Monday morning, albeit under slightly darker skies.
Thank you for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Justin van Zyl
Principal

OTHER NEWS

An introduction to The Day
The Day is a rich and engaging online educational resource that turns news into lessons across five differentiated reading levels.
It provides schools with unlimited access to activities that bring big global issues into the classroom through daily news written in-house, polls, videos, images, graphics, posters, translations and links for external guided research.
We engage all learners and inspire comprehension through challenging, rich texts, experiential learning, project work and the acquisition of core knowledge about the real world.
By making connections between current affairs and the curriculum, we encourage students to become more actively engaged in their studies and more inquisitive, enabling them to develop cultural capital and the skills they need to be successful in the modern world and ethical, informed citizens.
We believe that investigating what is true and exposing misinformation enables people to make good choices and fulfil their potential.
We work towards a world where young people everywhere learn how to become ambitious, capable learners, ask good questions, debate the issues, listen to others and develop a powerful voice in shaping a better future.
