First Step English Programme

first-steps

English as an additional language for young learners (5-8 years) with little or no English.

In the First Steps class the children will learn the very basics of English.

They will learn simple phrases such as:

  • Hello. Goodbye. Good Morning/Afternoon.
  • How are you? I am good/not good
  • What is your name? My name is………
  • How old are you? I am … years old.
Where do you come from? I come from……….
  • Where do you live? I live in…………
  • Please/Thank you.

This will include what we call “survival language”, for example, phrases such as:

  • I am hungry/thirsty/sick/tired/sad
  • I need to go to the toilet
  • Following simple instructions

We will also work on the sounds of the English language, known as phonics, which are the building blocks to learning to read. There will be a different theme each week, and activities will be linked to these.
The themes will include: numbers, shapes and colours, animals, food, home and family, days of the week and weather.

(Please note these themes may be subject to change)
