English as an additional language for young learners with basic English skills

Sounds of the English language (phonics) and useful phrases and vocabulary. Simple grammar structures. All four strands of learning will be covered; speaking, listening, reading and writing. A different theme will be introduced every week. In the Junior class the students will build on their existing knowledge of the English language.

The course will begin by recapping on simple social language and vocabulary such as:


Hello. Goodbye. Good Morning/Afternoon.
How are you? I am good/not good/so-so.
What is your name? My name is………
How old are you? I am … years old.
Where do you come from? I come from………
Where do you live? I live in…………
Please/Thank you.
I like… /… is my favourite……
This is a ………
This colour is…
This shape is…
Counting from 1-10/20

Students will build on this knowledge by expanding vocabulary and talking about family, friends, transport, animals, food, and things that we like and dislike. They will also continue to work on the sounds of the English language, known as phonics, which are the building blocks of reading.

We will also work on the sounds of the English language, known as phonics, which are the building blocks to learning to read. There will be a different theme each week, and activities will be linked to these.
The themes will include: numbers, shapes and colours, animals, food, home and family, days of the week and weather.
