Dear Parents,

As promised, spring returned this week enabling the students and the staff to get outside again without getting wet and cold. It also meant PE lessons could resume and allowed a little space for Miss Sophie to work with Year 6 on making working models of hearts in science. Spending some time with them as they constructed their models I could see how their models illustrated how a real heart worked. I am sure some of the Year 6s will want to repeat the experiment at home so look out for requests for red food dye!

This week we marked what would have been the birthday of Leo Papadopoulos, a much-loved student who sadly passed away last summer. Leo loved learning and especially Geography, so our Key Stage Three students took part in a series of geographical challenges that tested some of the teachers too. From naming African countries from their flags to naming all the capitals of the African countries, we were pleasantly surprised at how many the students knew including the interesting sounding names such as Antananarivo, Nouakchott and Ouagadougou which were an exercise in spelling too! The competition was run as a house competition and Akamas triumphed!

We will soon be receiving another visit from our friends at Generation Klimact who will help all our secondary students to understand what they can do to help limit the effects of global warming on Cyprus. I read recently that Cyprus is one of the countries most affected by global warming and its effects on the weather so, as custodians of this beautiful island, we should do our best to preserve it. Also coming up soon is our annual visit to MEDIMUN in Nicosia. Our delegates are fully prepared and raring to represent their countries on the various committees including the General Council. Thank you to Mr Will for organising our participation and to Miss Angelique for accompanying him and the students to the event.

We have had a good take up of our after school clubs this term and, whilst there is a limit on numbers for many of the clubs, there are still spaces available. I’d like to clarify the new arrangements for the Football Academy which operates on a Tuesday and Thursday. Its popularity for our younger students has encouraged up to invite both primary and secondary students to both afternoons where they will be coached separately.

It won’t be long now until ‘Carnival Time’ and our theme this year is ‘Outer Space’ I wanted to give parents plenty of notice for costumes for the day so we can have as many participants as possible on the day. I can foresee plenty of aluminium foil and tin cans plus the occasional TV aerial!

The spring exam series is now over, much to the relief of the students involved, and we have been pleased with the dedication shown to revision and preparation for the exams. Our students left each sitting confident that they had done their best and looking forward to the results.

We have been planning ahead for school trips this year and will soon be able to publish a list of events for each year group to help parents plan and budget in advance. There are some exciting trips coming up and more details will be available soon.

For now, enjoy the sunshine this weekend and I look forward to seeing you all again on Monday.

Kind regards,

David Lewis

Principal

OTHER NEWS

An introduction to The Day

The Day is a rich and engaging online educational resource that turns news into lessons across five differentiated reading levels.

It provides schools with unlimited access to activities that bring big global issues into the classroom through daily news written in-house, polls, videos, images, graphics, posters, translations and links for external guided research.

We engage all learners and inspire comprehension through challenging, rich texts, experiential learning, project work and the acquisition of core knowledge about the real world.

By making connections between current affairs and the curriculum, we encourage students to become more actively engaged in their studies and more inquisitive, enabling them to develop cultural capital and the skills they need to be successful in the modern world and ethical, informed citizens.

We believe that investigating what is true and exposing misinformation enables people to make good choices and fulfil their potential.

We work towards a world where young people everywhere learn how to become ambitious, capable learners, ask good questions, debate the issues, listen to others and develop a powerful voice in shaping a better future.
