Justin

Dear Parents,

As I take up the reins as principal of TLC, I think it is fitting that I pay respect to the tremendous contribution that my predecessor, Mr David Lewis, has made in his tenure. He has helped mould our school into what we see and experience on a daily basis. One could almost say that the school is a physical manifestation of his character and persona. From the primary school to the secondary school, everywhere I look, I see Mr Lewis’ traits emerge through the personalities of the children and how they interact with peers and staff alike. The high fives I now get to experience and the deep insightful questions I am posed are all soaked with Mr Lewis’ influence. I consider it a privilege to lead a school that has had its further foundations laid by a man of David’s calibre. Thank you, David, for your contribution in helping to shape the school into what we see and experience every day. We wish you well in your future endeavours and we hope that you will experience much love, success and happiness in the years that lie ahead.

As life runs its course and we say some goodbyes, we also get to say some hello’s and we welcome back Ms Marianna from her maternity leave and I am sure the Greek department are all smiles upon her return.

As the principal, but also a parent I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through the weekly newsletter, but you may be like me and wondered where all the dates and reminders are, until it was pointed out that all I need to do is just scroll down to the very bottom. To my surprise I also encountered the most insightful information resource in the form of “The Day”, and I have had a lovely time discussing some of the content with my own children.

This week sees us wishing our MEDIMUN Team much success as they leave for the University of Nicosia. We wish Mr and Mrs Wareham and our team safe travels and best wishes as they represent our school. I am sure that many fond memories are bound to be made through this incredible experience.

Ms Hurrell and Ms Outram have been hard at work planning for some quite delightful events. The musical showcase is scheduled for the 23rd of February, and a reminder to those interested to get those cameras out and begin recording your auditions as time for this one is near. I am sure the talent pool is vast and deep in this department and I cannot wait to see the submissions once received.

After school clubs are now well into the swing of things and it has been lovely seeing the active participation that has been taking place over the two schools. Cooking classes with Ms Sam in primary, as well as cricket and tag/touch rugby in secondary are back on the schedule as well as a new sport, Biathle, (races consisting of swimming and running as part of a single race) available to our primary school learners. It is pleasing to note that Biathle has its own federation established on the island and holds 3 major events between Larnaca and Limassol over the course of the year. Cyprus has even hosted the Biathle World Championships back in 2013. My hope is that we will be able to have representatives from TLC participating in these events in the near future and possibly even host our own event in time to come.

Ms Valentina, Ms Zoe and Ms Debbie together with staff and students are also well under way in preparing for the upcoming Peyia and Paphos carnivals on the 19th and 25th of February respectively. Please remember to complete the attendance submission form sent out by Ms Valentina recently as to whether your child will be attending.

Ms Emma has also recently addressed all the secondary students about the soon to be held track and field practices at the Peyia sports stadium which will be on the 9th of February for KS3 and on the 10th of February for KS4 and KS5 in preparation for the PANPAFIO athletics event.

There will also be some time set aside for Stinky Thursday (Tsiknopempti) on the 16th of February and both of our schools will be able to share in this celebration of Cypriot culture. This is immediately followed the next day by a presentation to our KS4 and KS5 students by Mr. Orestis from Generation Klimact, whose mission is to help the island become resilient to climate change.

The PTFA is also in the beginning stages of planning for our annual Easter Fair and the support shown from our parents has been phenomenal. If there are any parents who would like to avail themselves to help serve as members on the PTFA, please feel free to reach out to me and I will be able to steer you in the right direction. There are some spectacular plans that are at conception stage and it would be lovely to have the ability to tap into the potential knowledge and know-how of some of our parent body to help bring these ideas into realisation as we look to take our school from strength to strength.

So all in all, there is much happening on our two schools and as I was leaving the primary school this morning the delightful chorus of voices was heard singing the popular song by Elton John, “I’m Still Standing” and although it was a busy week, I smiled to myself and thought yes, I am indeed still standing.

Have a lovely weekend and I hope that the cold weather forecast doesn’t make itself felt for too long.

Kind regards,

Justin van Zyl

Principal

OTHER NEWS

An introduction to The Day

The Day is a rich and engaging online educational resource that turns news into lessons across five differentiated reading levels.

It provides schools with unlimited access to activities that bring big global issues into the classroom through daily news written in-house, polls, videos, images, graphics, posters, translations and links for external guided research.

We engage all learners and inspire comprehension through challenging, rich texts, experiential learning, project work and the acquisition of core knowledge about the real world.

By making connections between current affairs and the curriculum, we encourage students to become more actively engaged in their studies and more inquisitive, enabling them to develop cultural capital and the skills they need to be successful in the modern world and ethical, informed citizens.

We believe that investigating what is true and exposing misinformation enables people to make good choices and fulfil their potential.

We work towards a world where young people everywhere learn how to become ambitious, capable learners, ask good questions, debate the issues, listen to others and develop a powerful voice in shaping a better future.
