Issue 70

Dear Parents,
A warm welcome back to all our students, old, and those who have just joined us. Three days into the school year and already our new students have settled in well and are enjoying their education at TLC Private School.
My timetable this year means that I’m fortunate to be able to greet our primary students as they arrive at the school gate for three days of the week. I always say that the most essential tool for learning that you can bring to school is a smile and they are there in abundance in all our students. There were a few first (and occasionally second) day nerves but, as is always the case, within a few minutes of being in class with their friends and teachers, the nerves had gone and been replaced by excitement and fun.
This summer the school has spent a substantial sum of money on new resources, fully equipping primary science, replacing much of our PE equipment, implementing the White Rose Maths scheme in primary and we are also awaiting a fresh guided reading scheme, bringing modern classics to our young readers. It’s not just primary that have seen new resources; our secondary IT lab has more new computers and we will soon open our new dedicated sixth form centre for our Year 12 and Year 13 students. This September we have welcomed new additions to the team with Ms Wendy Heath taking over a Year 5 class, Miss Katerina Anastasiou joining our primary Greek department, Miss Sindy Probert taking on primary and Key Stage 3 PE, Mr William Wareham teaching KS3 History, Global Citizenship and Year 13 Business. Mrs Lorraine Naylor and Mr William Clocksin share the delivery of Computer Science in secondary. This year, psychology will be taught by Mrs Zarina Broad who worked with us on a voluntary basis last year. We look forward to seeing all their exciting ideas put into action for the benefit of our students.
I often write about how our students surprise us and a special mention has to be made of the new Year 10 History group. It’s always helpful for students to have a little background to what they are about to learn but it’s unexpected to have most of the class having researched the topic before we start the course and come with a large bank of prior knowledge. I’m looking forward to the two years with the group who, I am already sure, will excel in their exams.
Whilst the year has only just begun, already we are looking to enter students in this year’s Mediterranean Mini United Nations congress. This is a great opportunity for students to participate in debates with politics and social issues at their core as well as build up valuable CV experience. We will be issuing more details soon but if you want an early preview, take a look at http://www.medimun.net/home
Our after school activities program will begin on the 20th September with an exciting and varied range of activities including, by popular request, more sports activities. Later next week you will receive a link to the activities on offer and be able to sign your child up for these fun and exciting clubs.
So we have an exciting year ahead and I look forward to bringing you more news in the coming weeks and months.
Kind regards
David Lewis
Principal

The school has subscribed to the children’s news magazine The Week Junior and a digital subscription is now available to all TLC children.
The Week magazine is a UK based publication that summarises the week’s news and events from around the world and The Week Junior makes this information accessible for children aged 7 to 14.
To access the free digital version, download the The Week Junior app from Apple’s App Store or Android Google Play. Open the app and click on the settings icon (Three vertical dots) in the top right corner. Then click on Account then Existing Subscriptions and enter the code 001212024901.
You will be taken to the current issue page and can also view past issues. Each week, the new issue is automatically distributed late on a Friday or early Saturday morning and can be downloaded to your device. The magazine also contains puzzles and a weekly news quiz that will help you know how thoroughly your child has read the magazine.

We hope that you will encourage your child to read the magazine each week. All the children who took part in the trial of the magazine, loved it and now read it avidly each week. The information will help your child become more aware of what is happening in the world and how it affects them.
Please contact us if you have any difficulties.
