Issue 71

4.

Dear Parents,

Our first full week of the school year has passed and the students have settled well into their studies. Next week our after school activities begin you’ll receive a separate email with details of how to join. This year, in response to student requests, we have been able to raise the profile of sports within the after school activities and you’ll see frisbee, hockey, netball, football, rugby and multi-sports. Alongside this, we are raising the profile of our after school institute which will offer a wider range of activities which we hope will include a drone club, dance lessons, swimming lessons, tutor sessions and more. More details will follow in the weeks to come.

After restrictions were imposed by the Ministry over accepting parents into school, we have now rescheduled our ‘Meet the Teacher’ event to take place online this coming Wednesday. If you wish to attend, please accept the Teams invitation from your child’s teacher.

In my welcome letter at the start of the school year I asked parents to ensure that students wear the correct uniform and abide by the school’s regulations on jewellery, hair colour and style and the application of make up and nail varnish.
Some students are still ignoring the rules and, from Monday, will be sent home. If you do not wish to receive a call to ask you to come to collect your child, please ensure that they are fully compliant with the school’s regulations on appearance.

On Monday, Ms Ally presented an assembly to the secondary school to promote the Pearson writing competition, ‘Twist on a Tale’. The school has entered this competition in each of the last three years and we would like to increase our number of entries this year. Please encourage your child to participate, I am sure we have many budding authors and this could be the start of a glittering literary career.

Similarly, we would like to encourage students from Year 9 upwards to consider joining our team for the annual MEDIMUN conference in Nicosia in February. This youth model of the United Nations fosters debating skills between young people and is a sought after experience when universities and employers look at applicants’ CVs. The event is highly enjoyable and allows young people to meet like-minded peers from across the island. If a political or diplomatic career is a consideration, then MEDIMUN is the ideal springboard for this. If you wish to participate or find out more, please talk to Mr Wareham or email him on wil.war@tlccyprus.com.

For now, have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing our students again on Monday.

Kind regards

David Lewis

Principal

AWARE Week 2021

From the 18th to the 26th of September it is Project Aware Week. As part of this environmental program organized by PADI, the diving organization, tomorrow the 18th September at 9:00am there will be a beach clean-up at Faros Beach (Lighthouse Beach) , hosted by Paphos Municipality.
In the summer, dozens of our students, supported by their parents, carried out a similar beach clean up at Agios Georgios, organized by Evelyn Scott, one of our Year 8 pupils. This Saturday’s beach clean will also be accompanied by an underwater clean carried out by local PADI divers to help keep our oceans clean and environmentally friendly.

The school has subscribed to the children’s news magazine The Week Junior and a digital subscription is now available to all TLC children.

The Week magazine is a UK based publication that summarises the week’s news and events from around the world and The Week Junior makes this information accessible for children aged 7 to 14.
To access the free digital version, download the The Week Junior app from Apple’s App Store or Android Google Play. Open the app and click on the settings icon (Three vertical dots) in the top right corner. Then click on Account then Existing Subscriptions and enter the code 001212024901.

You will be taken to the current issue page and can also view past issues. Each week, the new issue is automatically distributed late on a Friday or early Saturday morning and can be downloaded to your device. The magazine also contains puzzles and a weekly news quiz that will help you know how thoroughly your child has read the magazine.

We hope that you will encourage your child to read the magazine each week. All the children who took part in the trial of the magazine, loved it and now read it avidly each week. The information will help your child become more aware of what is happening in the world and how it affects them.
