Issue 67

Dear Parents,
This week we received the welcome news that, after so many months and with an easing in the Covid restrictions, the students at TLC can now play ball games. From talking to many frustrated footballers and cricketers, I know that this will come as a great relief and, whilst at secondary today I could hear the thwack of leather on willow as the students enjoyed playing cricket in the Parkland grounds.
Earlier this week, Year 5 made another tentative step into the world of school trips, mindful of Covid regulations, and enjoyed an early morning visit to the Agios Georgios coastline for geographical studies. Talking to some of them on their return, they all said they’d enjoyed the trip, seeing much of what they’d studied for real in the coastal landscape. Around 25 of our students will return to Agios Georgios tomorrow at 9am for Team Eco Protect’s beach clean and I will be there with a litter picker and bag to help out! Thank you to Evelyn Scott and Aili Bielicki for organising the event.
Assessments have begun this week to contribute to the end of year grades for our students in Years 7 – 10 and next week our primary school children will also undertake assessments in maths and English. We wish them well as they show what they have learned over the course of the year.
At TLC, we are constantly working to raise standards and enable our students to be their very best. Never happy to rest on our laurels, this is an ongoing process examining the teaching and learning methods employed across the whole school. Recently I have received thanks from past students of TLC who have gone on to great things, all of whom felt that the school had prepared them well for their future studies. These include a student who has just obtained a first in economics at Coventry University and others who, still in the early years of their university courses, are already predicted a first class honours degree. Even our younger students who have returned to their home countries, find that their new schools have been very pleased with their progress at TLC. This includes students who have gained scholarships at good private schools and others who have been accepted at top state schools in their country.
We will soon be able to advise primary parents of their child’s class teacher for next year and, on the 22nd June, there will be a time set aside for the classes to move up to their new year group and new teacher. Following their graduation ceremony on Friday 18th June, Year 6 will visit the secondary school for a tour and be introduced to some of their new teachers and experience some of the lessons they will enjoy when school returns in September.
Have a great weekend and we’ll see you on Monday
Kind regards
David Lewis
Principal

The school has subscribed to the children’s news magazine The Week Junior and a digital subscription is now available to all TLC children.
The Week magazine is a UK based publication that summarises the week’s news and events from around the world and The Week Junior makes this information accessible for children aged 7 to 14.
To access the free digital version, download the The Week Junior app from Apple’s App Store or Android Google Play. Open the app and click on the settings icon (Three vertical dots) in the top right corner. Then click on Account then Existing Subscriptions and enter the code 001212024901.
You will be taken to the current issue page and can also view past issues. Each week, the new issue is automatically distributed late on a Friday or early Saturday morning and can be downloaded to your device. The magazine also contains puzzles and a weekly news quiz that will help you know how thoroughly your child has read the magazine.

We hope that you will encourage your child to read the magazine each week. All the children who took part in the trial of the magazine, loved it and now read it avidly each week. The information will help your child become more aware of what is happening in the world and how it affects them.
Please contact us if you have any difficulties.

This year the Competition theme is Community in the Commonwealth. With the global spread of COVID-19, we’ve seen the lives of many affected. However, through adversity, societies came together and stories of growth, community and hope continue to emerge. Here’s the information about how to structure your essay and other helpful hints to stimulate the imagination.
One winner and runner-up will be chosen from each category (senior and junior). Winners and runners-up will be brought to London for a week of educational and cultural events, culminating in a special Awards Ceremony. A number of Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards will be given in both the Senior and Junior categories, rewarding excellence in writing. All successful entries will receive a Certificate of Participation.
SENIOR CATEGORY – Born between 1 July 2002 and 30 June 2007 (14-18 years of age)
JUNIOR CATEGORY – Born on or after 1 July 2007 (under 14 years of age)
